The Standard

To function in life, we need a standard. The World English dictionary defines standard as “an accepted or approved example of something against which others are judged or measured .” When you purchase gasoline for your car, you will see a seal on the pump that guarantees that pump will dispense the amount designated on the pump. The FDA has set a standard for the food you purchase. FCC has a standard of conduct for television shows that are broadcast.

But when it comes to a moral standard, things become “fuzzy.” It seems everyone has their own standard for morality. The Bible says in the book of Judges that every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Judges 21:25 We’re not talking about people who chose to do wrong here. They chose to do right the Bible says; but they chose for themselves what was right. These are sincere people who said, “I want to do right, but I will decide what’s right.”

Unfortunately, that can only lead to chaos. What if I decide it is right for me to drive 75 mph through a school zone?  For life to have order there must be a standard for everyone. Twelve inches is a foot for everyone. Five thousand two-hundred eighty feet is a mile for everyone. But where do we get our standard on how we should live?

May I say, the Word of God should decide what is right!  No one has a right to decide what is good or evil.God has a right to decide what’s good and evil, after all He created us. Most people live by their own rules, instead of living by God’s rules found in the Bible. Some people even corrupt the meaning of the Scriptures in an attempt to justify their wickedness. Romans 1:25

When was the last time you consulted God’s Word for how you should live?
